To All Club Secretary’s
Thursday the 24th of April 2009
In recent times there have been inconsistencies in interpretation by Scrutineers regarding materials used on karts. In conjunction with the National Technical Officer, the following interpretation will apply forthwith:
1. 1 Pod Bar Angle Bolts facing down may be used with the use of a Ny-Lock Nut with no more than 2 threads showing.
1. 2 The use of the Bolt only type Mount for the rear crash bar is acceptable and complies with the rules of racing.
1. 3 The use of the Barrel (or Bullet) type Brake cable clamps are acceptable and complies with the rules of racing.
* 4 Floor Tray issues, commencing from the 1st February 2010 all floor pans shall comply with the Rules of Racing specification, that is; not less than 20mm of gap from the main frame to the floor tray edge. Floor pans currently being used that do not meet the aforementioned specification will be acceptable until 1st February 2010.

It's a good idea to clarify the INTENT of the rules, but in my opinion it's a dangerous thing to do to try to put exact wording in the rule book..
The obvious intent of the floortray rule (15.5) is to have the floortray fitted to prevent your feet going between the frame and the ground.
I don't know of anyone with feet that are 20mm wide, so where did this figure come from ?
As far as safety is concerned, as long as your foot can't slip off the pedal and get dragged beneath the kart, the floortray is fine..
I think AIDKA need to be careful of overcomplicating the rule-book.. It seems that one person pushing the envelope causes the majority of people to change their karts. That isn't right.
Just as an example, with the way the wording of the floortray rule is written above ie: "not less than 20mm of gap from the main frame to the floor tray edge".. I used to race a frame with a crossbar front end, (an arrow AX6CIK).. The "main frame" ended at the steering column mount, and had an extension in front of that for the pedals and front bar.
Under the above rule, the floortray would end at the "main" frame, and my feet would be suspended in mid air!! Just ridiculous. Unless you write a comprehensive rule to cover all situations, (which would end up being longer than this post), there will always be a loophole.
Whenever someone makes a "radical" alteration to their kart, and there is doubt about it's legality, instead of changing the rules and making the majority of karters alter their karts, just refer to the following rules:
4.1 Interpretation of Rules of Racing shall be decided by the AIDKA “Executive Committee” whose decision shall be final.
4.2 AIDKA make no pretence of having designed a fool proof set of Rules of Racing and Regulations, nevertheless Drivers, Crews and participants are required to abide by both the Rules of Racing and the spirit of the Rules of Racing. In the spirit of the rules, if the club officials on the day say your kart is unsafe, then you need to alter it!
