POLICY DOCUMENT FOR THE USE
OF
QUAD BIKES (ATVS)
2005
SUBJECT: Supply and use of Quad Bikes (ATVs)
1 Scope
This policy specifies requirements for quad-bikes (All Terrain Vehicles) as used in Go Kart operations. This includes specifications (including recommendations for the construction of modifications), personal protection equipment and prerequisites for the use.
2 Objective
• To assist in the transportation of a Drivers and/or equipment where the equipment is of substantial weight and/or needs to be transported over extended distances.
• To assist in the transportation of a Drivers, Pit Crew and or Officials during a race meeting in an emergency situation. It does not substitute for an ambulance.
3 Pre-requisites for the Quad Bike (ATV)
• The applicant must be a minimum of 17 years old on the day of assessment.
• The applicant may hold a current drivers license (not learners permit) .
• The AIDKA may also include other criteria as deemed necessary, including a level of competency and experience necessary.
4 Operational Requirements
The quad-bike shall be required to have the ability to operate safely. In order to operate safely the quad bike shall:
• Be able to transport equipment and or a driver over a distance within the confines of the respective Go-Kart Club.
• Be able to safely manoeuvre under controlled speed.
• Be able to operate, under load of soft sand (track sand traps)
• Provide appropriate throttle control to operator
• Safely carry a towing weight of a maximum 350kg
5 Specifications
The quad-bike shall fall within the following guidelines:
Engine capacity - Minimum 350cc
Maximum 450cc
• Full automatic or Semi Automatic
• Tyres should be balloon tyres and inflatable as approved by manufacturer
• All moving parts of the quad bike should be covered from the operator
• All quad bikes should be fitted with Brake and Throttle hand controls.
• The quad bike shall fitted with revolving lights when used in people occupied areas and at night
6 Personal Protection Equipment
Operators shall at all times be wearing the following Personal Protection
Equipment:
• Enclosed shoes with hard sole (sand shoes would be appropriate)
• Minimum of a shirt
• Minimum of trousers
• Protective, 100% UV eyewear (if helmet is not fitted with a visor)
• Helmet as required by local/state law
• Wear an approved transport coloured Safety Vest
It is highly recommended and encouraged that the following equipment is worn.
• The helmet must of the type approved by Standards Australia AS 1698 in accordance with AIDKA rule (New Rule 2005)
7. Construction and Attachment for pushing and towing equipment
The vehicle must be fitted with a safe push device of some absorbent material at the front, be of a type which does not restrict the view of the operator and is not going to cause damage to the kart or has the potential to injury the driver.
The safe push device of some absorbent material must not be wider than the rear nudge bar and not touch the rear wheels while attempting to restart the kart.
The vehicle should not be use to transport a kart to the pits unless it has an appropriate carrying device fitted to the rear of the vehicle or uses a small tow trailer. The tow trailer attachment be such that it will not come apart while travelling across rough terrain
8. Use in Karting
Local government and/or state regulations in relation to speed must be adhered to at all times, and under no circumstances is the quad bike to be used at a speed in excess of:
• 20km/hr in an open and unpopulated area; and
• 5km/hr in a moderately populated area.
The operator must be over the age of 17 and or be a competent and experienced person in its use.
The vehicle should not operate while karts are on the track racing or while karts are returning to the pits
The vehicle must be parked behind a tyre barrier in a safe area away from the track or if a kart leaves the track the kart is not at risk of running into the push vehicle.
Maintenance Requirements
All quad bikes should have been maintained on a regular basis and in accordance with the manufactures requirements. A maintenance record to be available to the club if privately owned. It must have Club approval for use at their track.

Hope this helps would need to get clarification from AIDKA before you go around driving a quad bike though.
