Hi, I'm looking to get into dirt karting and have a couple of questions. What I would like to know is can you use a bitumen kart and convert it to dirt use? I'm not looking to buy brand new so I have been looking at secondhand karts for sale in SA. I was thinking of a 28mm frame setup like an arrow ax8 or 9 and put dirt tyres on and go from there. Also, Do you need a 40mm axle setup? What exactly are the differences in the two types of karts? Your thoughts please guys? Cheers Scott

You can run the bitchemen kart but it is advised that you get a dirt steering column. Also you have to put on dirt rear rims on bitchemen front rims are OK to run. Yes you do need a 40mm axle set up but make sure you get an aluminum axle not a steal one.
The kart are a like to the eye but the bitchemen karts are a lot stiffer and have a lot more bars. Dirt karts are lot more loser and allow the kart to flex and grip onto the dirt better than a bitchemen kart.
If you would like a second hand kart and haven't got one yet it is a lot better to buy a second hand dirt kart so you don't have to make as many changes.

Hey mate that is exactly the info I needed. Unless I get a bargain bitumen kart, I'd be needing to spend a fair bit to modify it by the sounds. Do you or anyone know of any dirt karts that are for sale in SA?
Cheers Scott

Hi Scott Kym Peace at omega racing karts is a Good contact point being a manufacturer at Burton. There are a few differences with dirt to bitumen chassis if you want to have a drive of either contact me at some stage and we go go out to track for a quick session. Couple of points it is not necessary to go with a 40 mm axel thats optional A lot of high performing karts run 30mm as can be seen with the Amos karts that compete regularly at Yorke peninsula more so Toms older kart than his new one. I don't run a 40mm axel in either my outlaw which has 35mm axel or my 100cc open which has a 30mm axel. It comes down to trial and error as with all forms of racing if it suits your style go with it. But back to chassis my 100 cc open kart has a bitumen frame and is harder to control because of the stiffness so a lot more attention has to be with wheel set up toe in toe out and wheel track . It works quite well but compared to my outlaw which is based on a omega twin dirt chassis there is a vast handling difference. As per having more bars well that may or not be the case my outlaw frame has a lot more bars than its opposite but has a unique torsion bar set which helps the handling. I would suggest not buying the first chassis you see take the time to find one that suits your needs. There is a very good chassis for sale currently at Yorke peninsula club come out at next meeting and ask for Tom Amos his current chassis is for sale. A lot also depends on the class of kart you want to run and no it doesn't take a lot of time to alter a chassis. Regards Brenton Talbot brenton_talbot@yahoo.com

Hi Brenton, That is some great advice. One says bitumen karts are fine, One says no way. Seems okay to use one from what you say. I have been talking with Roger Smith and he got me thinking about getting into karting. He mentioned that kart to me also so it must be good. Do you know what sort of engine it has and what sort of frame it is? I don't know if you know me but I used to work at Earles, the guy with one leg? Well I remember doing some bits and pieces there for you. I will come out to the next meeting and have a look.
Also, do you think a 125 with a clutch and starter is a more affordable and suitable class for me rather than an outlaw? Cheers Scott

Hi Scott Yes I recognized the your name.Roger bought Tom's old kart. The new kart Tom is racing is designed and built by himself and is called a Handler Chassis they are an excellent chassis. Currently he is running a Cagiva Mito 125cc motor but kart can be bought without motor. Classes are personal choice, I love the outlaws they are a different experience, but there are a couple of good options there. 125cc with clutch and starter seems to be a good package, it is also possible to get an electric start KT100 se motor with a clutch both perform very well reliability is probably a little better with the KT100's but the 125cc's are still exciting to drive and still a good option. There are a lot more kt's running up here than 125's so a lot depends on where you want to start competition wise. Kym Peace at Omega Karts has a lot of good second hand complete packages at his shop on Burton Road, Burton I would give him a call and discuss with him what you want. The biggest problem with buying karts on Ebay is if they are not in SA the freight can be very hight to get them here and most karts are interstate. If you do a business search in yellow pages for go kart supplies there is one that will come up in the barrossa valley he is no longer in business but still has many karts he wants to clear and they weren't too badly priced. Its worth contacting him as well. Anyway I will catch up with you at next meeting I will look out for your car it stands out Regards Brenton

Hi Scott No not the same one must be two of us. I thought afterward there was a kart for sale at Wallaroo it has been gone right though and had tyres bearings the works replaced on it it used to belong to Barry Stoneman it had a recond Kt100 on it which could be sold off easily enough if you wanted to replace it. Give me a call on 043 8897 053
