Bitchemen karts run clutches as I saw at the recent City of Adelaide Nationals at Bolivar and I was just wondering if soon dirt karting will introduce clutches or are they going to stay the way they are.
I can't say what i think because I don't know what the difference is when you driving a kart with a clutch to one without.
What is your opinion on clutches?

It is my understanding that the clutch rule in bitumen racings is compulsory as of 2009 season. I hope it doesn't become compulsory in dirt karting as this would rule out a lot of older open class engines because suitable clutches are not available I have checked into this with a larger NSW kart accessories supplier. I run an open class 100cc reed valve motor pre dating existing clutches meaning my motor would be obsolete. I would not up date to a kt100 it is my feeling that there should be a good spread across all classes and we should consider that we could loose some classes and with the possibility of some karts going as well. Expense of fitting a clutch and also having to have an external starter should be a consideration as well especially when trying to attack new members to the sport. If AIDKA did decide to go along the clutch idea my open class kart would be lost I maybe would consider redesigning it into an outlaw kart and running this together with my other outlaw kart with a view to swelling the outlaw ranks especially at Yorke Peninsula club. I don't know if AIDKA has any plans to look at clutches be used, if the do I would hope it is optional and keep the classes we have. I would think we would be better off building our kart numbers not loose them. I am sure a lot would disagree with me but at least all should be open to discussion.

The only option for AIDKA is to allow axle clutches to come in. These are more expensive than the engine clutches but would let us still run 9 tooth standard engines. We have to heax this way due to OH&S problems with pushing etc. I think this would be a good option for all classes

If you add up the costs of every direct drive AIDKA kart fitting a decent axle clutch and buying an external starter, i think you'll find it's cheaper to buy a fleet of quad bikes for each club for starting the karts!
The kart industry love putting new rules in place and using the insurer (or safety) as a convenient excuse... This happens frequently in AKA.
Fortunately AIDKA have by and large been ignored by this tactic, but as numbers grow i'm sure this sort of stuff will need to be dealt with.
Until the insurance company gives us notice that they will refuse to insure non-clutched karts, i feel very strongly that we shouldn't be heading in that direction. It's just another expense for the karter that is unwarranted.
PS... i have nothing against clutches themselves, i race 125.. Just hate the way the karting industry treat AKA karters, and think it would be a great shame to see this filter through to AIDKA..
Note, this isn't aimed at S.A. kart shops.

clutches are now optional on all J classes, kt clutches are still being worked on. this came out at the last AIDKA meeting. the rule had been oked last year but has taken some pushing to get full ok, funny that when the members had voted to included it
anyway it is in

The strike clutch is the only clutch approved for use by AIDKA.

I personally think that they should be allowed for the KTs as they can already be used on the KT twins [optional] they bought the 125 class in & the fact that at a lot of meetings it is so hard to get pushers as there are a lot of people who just does not want to help push

There is a difference between having the option to use a clutch, and being forced to use a clutch..

Think AIDKA made a really good decision because they made it optional we can see how drivers go with clutches for ourselves and chose if we want to run the clutch in J Classes.

There is a difference between having the option to use a clutch, and being forced to use a clutch.. There is a difference having if forced upon you could end up with a bad reaction. So this way if the make it optional say for 2 years people start seeing that when they crash they can restart and get clutches it won't be such a shock when they do make it compulsory if they ever do if some . Just My 2Cents.

All classes should have the option to run clutches in 2009. It would be a good idea

Can someone tell me if you have a clutched kart like a 125, or kt with one fitted, do they ever stall if you spin and roll backwards? Cheers Scott
