I have a Motoplat ignition on my go kart engine. It has no coil and I would like to know if I can fit an after market coil to suit the Motoplat ignition or is it better to replace the whole ignition system?

Hi Denty, I've never tried using mismatched coils with a motoplat system. Check out this website: members.shaw.ca/hlc_vintage_mx/motoplat.html for a description of what is inside the motoplat coil. I'm sure if you could find one with the same layout it would work. I have no idea on how you would get that info though ? There is a lot of interest in vintage karting at the moment, and some people have great motoplat collections, so you should be able to get a replacement motoplat coil 2nd hand if you look around.

Thanks Tom for your reply. I have been looking for a coil and after contacting a local racing club I have found someone that wants to buy my engine for vintage racing as is. After talking to someone knowledgeable I found out that the engine is a very old rotary motor. It was pointed out that I could spend a bit of money on this engine and I would still have an uncompetitive unreliable motor. With the money I get for this motor I can put it towards part payment for a KT. Not so concerned about uncompetitive but last thing I want is not able to race because I can't start my Kart.

Good call, if you are starting out racing a rotary is probably not the best choice. And an old rotary will not be competitive, and some parts are getting hard to find.
Let me know if you need any help finding a good KT.
