Hot, Hot, Hot At The Disbury Dome!
Author : Paris Charles
When asked to sum up the weekend of the 10s High Friction Surfaces Australia Racing Team after all had been run and done at the Croft Construction / Murray Machining and Sheds 2008 Australian 360 Sprintcar Championship, team principal Kevin Renton replied ‘Hot, hot, hot at the Disbury Dome!’ with a wink and a smile, referring to the extreme temperatures endured over the three days of racing at the Murray Bridge Speedway.
Thursday, Friday and Saturday the temperature soared well beyond comfortable conditions registering 38c, 40c and 42c respectively. The weekend kicked off on the back foot for Steven, posting 30th position on the Thursday night time trial. Night 2 progressed better for the team and with just a little bit of luck Steven would have qualified for the Preliminary A Main.
With much work to be done on the final night the boys on the crew; Rocky, Wayne, Jay, Terry, Brad, Bob, Dave and Chris worked tirelessly to get the car dialed in and the hard work seemed to be paying dividends for team driver Steven Caruso. After narrowly missing a direct transfer to the feature race by a solitary position Caruso lined up the High Friction Surfaces Australia / Profix Salisbury Eagle on pole position of the 19 car field. Steven drove to a comfortable lead only to have to do it over and over again in the crash riddled event that took over 50 minutes to complete.
While out in front Caruso looked set to enter the main event before disaster struck. With 17 of the 20 laps down Caruso looped his machine, bringing on the cautions. At the restart a disappointed Caruso tacked on at the back of the pack and despite his valiant efforts he failed to transfer to the main event, finishing in 7th position.
The High Friction Surfaces Australia Racing Team would like to congratulate Ryan Jones on winning the 2008 Australian Championship and look forward to squaring up against Ryan and the rest of the 360 competitors next week (15-3-08) at Adelaide’s Speedway City for round 12 of the domestic Sprintcar Track Championship Series.
