Steven Caruso & The Kiss Of Death
Author : Paris Charles
When Steven Caruso’s car rolled out of the trailer last weekend, he and the team felt good to be back in familiar surroundings after a two full weeks of burning the midnight oil to get back on track. The car was back in the traditional blue, white and day glow orange, the number 10 was on the tail tank and they were at their home track, Speedway City where Steven had won three out of the last four features, so all looked good, right?
Wrong..! Dead, stiff and bent are the words that first came to mind as the damage was revealed in the cold light of day after Steve Caruso’s Mattiski Funerals / Profix Port Adelaide Eagle slid high wide and ugly into the turn 1 fence during the hot lap session.
The ex Jason Johnson Eagle was towed back to the pit area for further inspection where it was quickly discovered that the front of the chassis was pushed over to the right about 2 inches yet despite the damage Steve and the team decided to ‘Profix’ the car as best as possible and push on collecting vital points in the Speedway City 360ci Sprintcar Track Championship Series.
With a car that would have been loaded into the trailer by most teams, the crew reset the car as good as possible to square.
But despite all the changes made during the night the car would not respond properly, dealing Steve the hand of a severely mishandling car (no drive from the left rear)
Caruso posted a very creditable second in the final heat to set up a position six for the all important 25 lap feature event.
Despite being severely disadvantaged Steve continued on, man handling the Northside Wholesale Cars / Couzner Electrical Eagle for every inch of the journey. Caruso held his position for the majority of the distance but finished in seventh out of the 16 cars, netting him a handy haul of points in the series fight.
Upon reflection of the night the words ‘dead stiff and bent’ have been replaced by ‘gritty and determined’ as Steve and the 10s team proved that their never say die attitude got them to the finish line.
Keep an eye on this website for further news regarding Steven Caruso and an upcoming promotional event to be staged later this week. The car will then be back in action at Adelaide’s Speedway City for the running of the Jack Daniels Australian Sprintcar Masters, Friday 15th of February 2008.
