Blowtorch and a mould. I use a 4inch metal pipe cap as it makes a great easy to place shape. Cut the lead into small pieces and drop it in the bottom of the mould. You possibly could even use a gas stove.
Also you could use a small pie tin or cake tins as they come in all shapes and size .Spray some wd 40 in them first. This helps the lead not to stick I was told.

An adult should melt and pour the lead. If this cannot be arranged, go get a hammer and start pounding your lead into shape. It will take some time, energy and creativity to get the shape you want, but it will be a lot safer. Wear some good gloves; pounding the lead will make it hot. If nessecary, the lead can be pounded flat and thin and cut with tin snips. Unfortuneately, two small pieces of lead can not be smashed together to make a bigger piece. Hot glue can bind them together as well.

hi,
theres plenty of ways to melt and mould lead, to get the shape you will something made of steele, cut down coffee tins or anything like that is fine but i went to cheap as chips and go a stainless steel cup for $2 [any camping/outdoor shop or will have these] because lead will sometimes stick to the bottom of tins, if you dont want a round bit get creative anything steel is fine for a mould, and remember weights must be attached to the frame or seat only. Weight less than 3kg must be fastened with a minimum 8mm high tensile bolt and locknut, weights above 3kg must be fastened to the kart with a minimum of one additional 8mm high tensile bolt and locknut per 5kgs or part thereof. All weights must have a 30mm washer placed against both the bolt head and securing nut. As per AIDKA rule book 2009.
To melt it i use a butane camp cooker [BBQ or anything like that will work] and put my lead in an old saucepan untill its melted right down [40mins] then put my mould [my cup] on some old scales and pour the lead in to my desired weight, alternitivly you can take your saucepan and cup to a car exaust shop and ask them to melt it with their oxy torch.
One tip I would have is when you pour the lead into your mould keep it very still and level untill it sets or you will get an uneven nasty looking surface, nobody will see that side but its easier to bolt on when its nice flat and level, if your using a cup or similar make sure you dont make it so thick that no bolts are long enough to go through it.
Hope this helps

12lbs is about 5.5 kilograms so I guess you could use a cake tin. Then this can be placed on the back of the seat. Works just like your weight then.
